Cannabis Manufacturing and Distribution Jobs

Cannabis manufacturing and distribution jobs involve the production and manufacturing of cannabis products from the first step to distribution and final sale.

Cannabis manufacturing means to compound, blend, extract, infuse, or otherwise make or prepare a cannabis product. Manufacturing includes the processes of extraction, infusion, packaging or repackaging, and labeling or re-labeling of cannabis products. Below are some of the most common jobs in the cannabis industry.

In the cannabis industry, distribution refers to the crucial stage of the supply chain where cannabis and cannabis products are moved from licensed cultivators and manufacturers to licensed retailers (dispensaries). Distributors purchase cannabis and cannabis products from cultivators and processors and then sell and deliver those items to retail dispensaries and on-site consumption sites.

Delivery operators deliver cannabis and cannabis-infused products from retail dispensaries to consumers. Licensed distributors also play a vital role in ensuring that cannabis products are handled, stored, and transported in a safe, compliant, and quality-controlled manner. They are the vital link that connects cultivators and manufacturers to retail outlets.

Production and Manufacturing

In cannabis manufacturing, the required education often depends on the specific job functions, which can range from general production work to specialized scientific roles.

  • Entry-Level Roles (e.g., Infusion Assistant, Packaging Assistant): A high school diploma or equivalent is generally sufficient. On-the-job training is often provided. Attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and good manufacturing practices (GMP) are crucial skills.
  • Lab/Extraction Technicians: Many employers prefer a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or a related scientific field. Specialized training or certifications in extraction methods (e.g., CO2, solvent-based) and safety protocols or product development can enhance job prospects.
  • Management/Product Development Roles: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant science or business field is often expected. Experience in a professional lab, food science, or production management setting is highly valued.

Distribution

The distribution sector focuses on logistics, inventory management, and transport, with educational requirements varying by responsibility level.

  • Entry-Level Roles (e.g., Delivery Driver, Dispatcher): A high school diploma or equivalent is typically the minimum requirement. A valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and the ability to pass a background check are essential for delivery drivers.
  • Logistics/Inventory Management Roles: A bachelor’s degree in business administration, supply chain management, or logistics is often preferred for management and coordinator positions. Proficiency with inventory tracking software (like METRC or BioTrackTHC) and knowledge of compliance is important.
  • Compliance Officers/Managers: A bachelor’s degree in law, business, or a related field, along with in-depth knowledge of state-specific cannabis regulations, is essential for these roles.

Key General Requirements

Beyond formal education, certain requirements are universal across the legal cannabis industry:

Transferable Skills: Experience from other highly regulated industries (e.g., food production, pharmaceuticals, general logistics) with a focus on compliance and quality control is highly valued.

Age Requirement: Employees must generally be at least 21 years old in most legal states.

Background Checks: Prospective employees typically need to pass a comprehensive background check.

State-Specific Licensing/Permits: Many states require employees to obtain a specific agent card, license, or work permit from the state’s cannabis regulatory body.
